When I had to get up early this morning to take Clay for a scout outing, I was a little grumbly about it, but now I'm so glad that I did. He had the opportunity to help place American flags on the graves of veterans at a graveyard in Boiling Springs. It was truly an awesome experience.
I went by to take a few pictures, but found myself tearfully reading the headstones and just watching the flags in the wind. Clay asked if we could take a flag to Papa Walker's grave in Chesnee, so I stopped by the store on the way home for a flag. After the Red Hat lunch we're going to run up there.
As part of state teaching requirements, each year, we spend about an hour on November 11th doing a Veteran's Day "activity". Being a reading teacher, I usually have a read aloud and then a comprehension activity. This year, though, it looks like one of my parents is coming to do a presentation. After today, I plan to change my Veteran's Day lesson....I want it to be much more meaningful for the students. If you have any ideas, let me know.

Clay and Mr. Fann put flags on the graves. Clay was very excited that he and fellow scout, Dylan, were able to place the flag on the grave of Ryan Hutchins, a veteran from Boiling Springs, killed in action a couple of years ago.
